When Tammy, the creative mind behind the hit movie Dagmar, approached us, she came with a unique and exciting vision. The project was born from a pivotal, magical scene in her film where Dagmar, the beloved dragon, sheds his iridescent scales—the "Dragon Dust."
Her goal was to extend this cinematic moment into a tangible world of children's products and merchandise. This wasn't a request to simply create movie merch; it was a challenge to build a genuine, standalone brand that could capture the film's magic and thrive on its own.
Our central challenge was one of translation: how to distill the essence of a visual world—the movie Dagmar—into a new, distinct brand identity. The look and feel were already established by the film's aesthetic. Our task was to create a brand ecosystem that felt authentic to its origin yet was strong enough to stand on its own across the diverse applications Tammy envisioned.
The critical balancing act was to create a clear link to Dagmar without making the brand entirely dependent on the film. We needed an identity that could evoke the wonder of the dragon without literally showing him in every instance. The brand had to be sophisticated enough for a multi-category launch but playful enough to connect instantly with its young audience.
We developed a comprehensive brand identity system designed for flexibility, recognition, and delight. Our solution was broken down into three core pillars: a strategic logo design, a versatile color palette, and a clear vision for application.
Our creative exploration began with the heart of the story: Dagmar himself. We knew a direct visual reference was necessary, but it had to be executed with subtlety and cleverness. A full dragon would have anchored the brand too heavily as "movie merchandise," limiting its potential to grow independently.
Our solution was more elegant and ownable: we crafted a playful, rounded, and friendly custom wordmark for "Dragon Dust" and seamlessly integrated Dagmar's iconic tail at the very end of the name. It creates a memorable brand asset, maintains brand independence, and hints at the origin story.
The "Dragon Dust" itself was our direct inspiration for the color palette. To capture the shimmering, magical quality of Dagmar's scales, we didn't choose static colors. Instead, we developed two distinct, iridescent gradients.
This choice was both aesthetic and strategic. The vibrant, shifting colors immediately communicate a sense of magic and play. More importantly, the two distinct gradients function as a built-in differentiation system for diverse product lines.
The strength of the identity system was proven in its application. We developed a series of mockups to showcase how the playful and delightful character of the Dragon Dust brand would come to life.
By applying the logo and iridescent palettes to products Tammy envisioned, such as sets of kids' pajamas and a branded race car, we demonstrated the system's versatility. On pajamas, the logo’s tail could become a playful detail wrapping around a sleeve. On a toy car, the iridescent gradient could mimic a high-end, magical paint finish.
